FAQs for Creatives

Use WNW to Get Hired

  • As a Creative, keeping your status current is what keeps this whole thing working. To update your availability, just click "Update Status" on your Feed page. There is a text field below the status where you can put any additional notes about your employment status.

When updating to Available Soon, a calendar pop-up will allow you to select the date you'll be available next.

  • If you're new to the freelance game and aren't sure how much to charge, ask around. Ask your friends who are Creative or ask Hirers you have a relationship with to give you an honest range of what they pay for people at your same level.

You don't need to put an exact price on your profile, just select the appropriate price range. This will give you a little flexibility and make starting out a bit easier.

Here are the rate breakdowns across currencies:

    $: 0-50/hr or 0-500/day

  • You can find job opportunities in the Jobs section of WNW. Once there, you can filter our currently active jobs to see what matches your Titles, Skills, Experience, Location, and more.

  • All your job application info can be found by navigating to Jobs > My Opportunities.

  • Navigate to our Jobs section and then use our On-Site filter to view job opportunities that match your needs.

  • When you update your status, you're broadcasting to everyone who sees your profile that your information is current!

This is one of the most important things our Hirers are considering when they use the site, so be sure to keep up with it.

  • There is no exact rule for how soon Available Soon is, but when you know a job is about to end, you can get ahead of the game and start looking for work before the current gig ends.

We recommend switching to Available Soon about 1-2 weeks before becoming Available. You also have the option to select the date you'll next be available.

  • Creatives and hirers both consistently stress the importance of communication in any job-related interaction. We've added active response statistics to Working Not Working so creatives and hirers now know how quickly they can expect a response from the person they're reaching out to. This will help you be as efficient as possible in your job searches, and even help you prioritize who you're reaching out to.

Your response time is the average length of time it takes you to respond to an incoming message. Your response rate is the percentage of incoming messages to which you respond. These visible metrics help set expectations and encourage quicker and more productive engagement.

  • The application goes directly to the hirer. We don't get involved in the hiring process: we are just the platform that connects awesome creatives with some of the world's top companies. If a hirer thinks you would be a good fit for a role, they will reach out with next steps.

  • Working Not Working has Company Pages to share information about the great companies that use the site and those that our members have worked for.

Creatives can share insights about the company experience and their interest in working with the company.

  • Only Hirers can see your rate range. Your rate is not visible to fellow Creatives or anyone that isn't on Working Not Working.

Editing My Profile

  • You can edit your profile by clicking the "Edit Profile" button once you click your profile picture thumbnail, in the top right corner of any page.

  • Let that Hirer know that you're not interested so they can move on with their hiring search. Acknowledging that you are not interested versus not available is part of the clear communication that helps Working Not Working connect the best candidates with the right jobs, so you're helping everyone.

In addition to helping keep Hirers and Creatives on the same page, you'll be improving your response rate, which is always a good thing.

  • First, click "Edit Profile" in the upper right of your profile. Once in edit mode, click "Upload Profile Image" over your avatar.

After choosing a great picture of yourself, your image will be scaled and centered.

If you'd like a little more control over your image, crop it into a square in your favorite photo editing software. Your photo will automatically save. Click the Exit Edit Mode button and you're good

  • To change any of your basic info (name/email/username/city/password), click your profile picture thumbnail in the top right corner, then choose the Settings tab from the dropdown menu.

By default, you'll be shown your Basic Info and can edit any of the information from that page.

Be sure to save these changes by clicking the "Update Basic Info" button at the bottom of the page.

  • Our Search algorithm is designed to show Hirers results that are relevant to them. So, each individual may see different results based on who they are and what search criteria they have entered. Here are the basic factors that Search is weighing:

Recent status update - a current status is better than one older than a month

Completeness of profile - the more relevant detail you include, the better

Completeness of portfolio - at least 3 projects to be found in Search

Connections - more shared connections between you and the Hirer

  • When uploading videos to your portfolio, please note that we need YouTube and Vimeo complete URLs with the actual video code, not the title of the video.

Be sure the video can be shared publicly.

Private or password-protected videos will not display

  • First, check to make sure you've only entered your LinkedIn username in the field on Working Not Working. The site will autofill http://linkedin.com/in/

If that doesn't work it's most likely you have not set up a public profile on LinkedIn. If you do not have an /in/ URL, you have not yet created a public LinkedIn profile. Here's how to do it:

You can customize your public profile URL when you edit your public profile. Custom public profile URLs are available on a first come, first served basis.

Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.

You'll see a URL link under your profile photo like www.linkedin.com/in/yourname. Move your cursor over the link and click the Settings icon next to it.

Note: "Update your public profile settings" will show up if you don’t have a public profile. Learn how to enable your public profile.

Under the Your public profile URL section on the right, click the Edit icon next to your URL.

Type the last part of your new custom URL in the text box.

    Click Save.

  • The portfolio section of your profile has drag-and-drop functionality so you can arrange up to 12 projects in the order that you would like them to be seen.

You can also choose which project should show up first in Search results by selecting "Feature".

  • Before making any changes to your profile click "Edit Profile" in the top right hand corner.

In the PERSONAL INFO section scroll down to Rate. Click on the dropdown and select the range that best corresponds with your rate. We've provided you with a range so you have some flexibility and room to negotiate. When you're contacted by a hiring manager you can tell them if you typically bill hourly or daily.

Remember to hit "Save Personal Info" at the bottom of that section.

  • A background is another place to show off work or your style. Before making any changes click "Edit Profile" in the top right hand corner.

Then click "Add Background Image of Your Work" in the middle of your header section.

Choose your image to upload. The site will scale your image the full width of the browser automatically. We suggest uploading a file that's at least 2560x1440px for the best quality.

To remove your background, click "Add Background Image of Your Work" then "Remove Image" from the dropdown.

  • Keeping a paywall around Search is how we keep the service free for you and the lights on at Working Not Working. That being said, if you are part of the team that does Hiring at your job, you can have those permissions on your profile as well. You can add a plan to your account in the Plan & Billing section of your Settings. All of our plans come with a three day money back guarantee.

  • Your safety and security are important to us, and you can now use Block and Flag to keep your Working Not Working experience positive.

The Action Bar at the top of any profile lets you use these features.

When you block another user, they will no longer be able to view your profile or see your activity on the site in the Feed. You'll also no longer be able to see them in either of those places. The blocked user is not notified of your block.

With the flag feature, you're able to let Working Not Working know about objectionable activity. Like the block feature, the person that is flagged does not know they've been flagged. Working Not Working will address all flagging events and render a decision to the parties as necessary.

  • If for some crazy reason you want to delete your WNW profile, you can do so from your Account Settings. We also have a "ghost mode" available. This is suited for creatives who are in between jobs or in the process of updating their profile and want to stay under the WNW radar for a bit.

    *image height is not limited

  • In Edit mode, if you scroll down to the bottom of your profile you will see a black "Add Project" button.

  • As a freelancer, you should always have a Statement of Work (SOW) in place before you begin working with a client. This applies whether you're being paid through WNW Payments or not.

Simply put, a SOW is a written contract between you and the freelance client that defines the specific project you will be working on for them in detail.

It should include the names of the parties involved, the expected dates of employment, delivery dates, and any rights/disclosures/non-competition information as well as payment information.

  • When we created Working Not Working we intended for profiles to be for individuals only. However, we also understand that some creatives like to work together.

If you and your teammates decide to create separate profiles, you can also include that you're part of a team in your bio and link to each other's profiles by Following and Vouching for one another. If you worked with a creative and you want to showcase what you worked on together you can list them as a collaborator in that portfolio piece. If they aren't on WNW, you can still list them as a collaborator and nominate them.

  • Thank you for reaching out. We understand that the application process isn’t easy, and well, can sometimes feel like a lot. While this is the case, it pays off in the long run for you. Companies turn to Working Not Working for the best creative talent, and we are giving you the chance to represent your best and brightest self. All you have to do to submit is upload three pieces of work to your portfolio (although the more you share, the better). There is no rush to complete the profile, feel free to work on it whenever is best for you.

  • You can now edit your profile under review, including broken links. So you know, the most important part of any profile is the material itself: links are merely meant to supplement the content of your profile.

Follows and Vouches

  • Followers are people in your WNW orbit. They are who you see news about in your Notification feed. The Creatives that Hirers follow are the ones that they see in their Dashboard. Visitors to your profile can see who follows you and who you are following. Hirers who favorite Creatives will get an email when that Creative becomes AVAILABLE or AVAILABLE SOON. Creatives are notified by email when a new person begins following them.

  • Followers and the users that you follow are people in your WNW stratosphere of varying levels of relationship. Vouches are a step of beyond this. A Vouch is a stamp of approval you can give to members. Vouches should only be given to people you've worked with and are willing to put your name behind. To Vouch for someone just click the "Vouch for [name]" button in the right column of their profile. They will be notified by email. Others will be able to see who you've vouched for on your profile.

Remember: A Vouch isn't a "like" button. Only vouch for people you've worked with and know are legit. It's like the mafia, but with slightly more dramatic consequences.

We encourage you to search and Vouch for people you know. Your Vouch will help Creatives increase their chances of getting hired and allow Hirers to feel confident booking new talent because of the endorsements of people they already know and trust.

  • Yes. Creatives receive an email notification when a user follows them. For Hirers, that includes the hirer's name and company. Both Hirers and Creatives can also locate their followers anytime in the Followers section of their profile.

  • All WNW members (creatives and hirers) can see who has vouched for you and who you have vouched for. So make sure you only Vouch for people you know and are willing to stand behind.

  • The Feed and Creatives pages are a great place to Discover and Follow other Creatives in the community. You will see Notifications on this page anytime someone you went to school with and / or that you may have worked with in the past joins WNW.

  • Followers are people in your WNW orbit with varying degrees of acquaintance, from colleague to co-working space neighbor.

Vouching, on the other hand, is a level above this. When you vouch for someone you are saying that if you were unavailable, anyone you've vouched for would be a great replacement.

In order to vouch for a Creative, you both have to be Following one another. To Vouch for someone, click the "Vouch" button on the Action Bar. That person will be notified by email that you gave them your seal of approval

  • Yes. In fact, it's encouraged. When you follow another creative, everyone in their WNW network, as well as yours, will see the notification. In turn, more of the creative community will see your work. The multiplier is quite considerable.

You will both need to follow each other to view each other's social media links and portfolio, as well as to Vouch. We do this because it reduces the likelihood of headhunters abusing our platform and sending Creatives unsolicited requests elsewhere.

Having Followers also looks great in the eyes of the Hirers in our community, because it shows them that you're active in the community and your industry as well as a talented creative professional.
