Do you want $10k? Our friends at Dark Igloo are helping GIPHY produce its first ever micro-film festival. Film submissions must be 18 seconds or less, and Dark Igloo thinks many of their fellow WNW Members, from advertisers to animators to filmmakers, could create something enduring in that loopable timeframe. We happen to agree.

ART OPENING: SOLD OUT, PORTLAND
ART OPENING: SOLD OUT, PORTLAND
Don't let the title fool you, tickets are not sold out.
WNW Members #1995 Mark Richard Miller and #2024 Dave Franzese, also known as the creative team Dark Igloo, have an exhibit titled Sold Out opening at FISK in Portland this Friday at 8PM. If you're in the area, make sure to swing by and check out Dark Igloo's signature nostalgic absurdity.
WHO: Dark Igloo (Dave Franzese & Mark Richard Miller) are a creative team based in Brooklyn, NY. Best friends and collaborators for nearly a decade, their studio’s output is characterized by a dedication to personal initiatives. A shared vision, complementary skills, and evolving interests have lead to a portfolio that spans illustration, photography, animation, video games, sculpture, and fart jokes.
WHAT: SOLD OUT is a portal to the nostalgic and absurd. Where upgraded ephemera, original works, and interactive installations hang out side by side. Details are exaggerated, the lowbrow is put on a pedestal, and the surreal is made real, framed, and sold.
WHEN: Opening is October 16th at 8pm / Open from October 16 to November 15
WHERE: FISK Gallery - 3636B N MISSISSIPPI AVE — PORTLAND, OREGON 97227
HOW: No RSVP necessary, just show up fashionably on time
WHY: Dark Igloo ... isn't that enough?

WORK: DARK IGLOO + ADC YOUNG GUNS
WORK: DARK IGLOO
+ ADC YOUNG GUNS
WNW Members Dark Igloo, aka #1995 Mark Richard Miller and #2024 Dave Franzese, art directed this year’s ADC Young Guns Competition, one of the design world's most prestigious accolades. Its a tight knit community with Rich Tu even referring to it as "the mafia." A whole crew of WNW members count themselves among the YG elite, including but not limited to Jessica Hische, Will Bryant, Mikey Burton, Dan Savage, Shane Griffin, Jon Contino, Christine Gignac, even our WNW Founding Father Justin Gignac himself!
Dark Igloo commissioned and animate a set of logos from thirteen past winners; they also collaborated with Chen&Kai on the cubes that will be awarded next fall. Be sure to mark your calendar for the YG deadline of March 31st. You can apply here.
Dark Igloo elaborated on what it means to win: "Winning Young Guns is more than a bullet point in your bio and a cube on your shelf. It’s access to an active, vibrant community of the most talented craftsman, biggest thinkers, and pushiest envelope-pushers of the last 13 years.
This competition is truly interdisciplinary - illustration, photography, furniture design, programming, creative direction. As long as you are 30 or under, bringing sharp ideas to life through beautiful work, and marching to the beat of your own drum, we want to hear from you.
The cubes awarded next fall represent this community. Each cube is embedded with inspirational objects from 13 years of Young Guns; examples range from James Victore’s pencils, the tape measure Dana Tanamachi used on five years of murals, Brian Moore’s keyboard, inspirational trinkets from Will Bryant’s desk, family heirlooms, and essential pieces of key projects are all getting chopped into cubes."

WORK: THIS IS GIPHY
WORK: THIS IS GIPHY
WNW Members #1995 Mark Richard Miller & #2024 Dave Franzese are the mad scientists behind Dark Igloo. Last time we checked in on them, they had created The Greatest Board Game Never Made, basking in all of its 80s & 90s glory. Now, they're tackling the modern form of playtime, collaborating with Giphy. The video above is an introduction to the world of gifs, styled as a news report... and it's bananas. Dark Igloo tells us, "This was our first time putting a dog head on a human body. In a project filled with great moments, the newsroom set stands out: we stood an ipad up surrounded by small pieces of clear plastic to create the effect of an abstract, futuristic newsroom." Keep an eye out for Dave starring as "Trending Report Larry."
The gifs and images below take us on a gonzo odyssey through the branding and collateral developed for the news report, and for Giphy. "The big idea here was to bring gifs into the physical world, so all of the giphy business cards, stickers, and iphone cases feature lenticular holograms. It was an awesome opportunity to collaborate with some of our favorite gif artists (WNW Members #2697 Kyle Sauer, #2764 Julian Glander, & #1637 Tim Reynolds, and more)."

NOT WORKING: ON THE GREATEST BOARD GAME NEVER MADE
NOT WORKING: ON THE GREATEST BOARD GAME NEVER MADE
WNW Members #1995 Mark Richard Miller & #2024 Dave Franzese, the duo behind Dark Igloo, recently created the greatest board game never made. It's called Bored Game, and it's awesome in all of its 80s-and-90s-referential glory. Dark Igloo had help on this project from some of their "eskimos," including WNW members #2640 Jose Fresneda, #2697 Kyle Sauer, and #224 Nick Hum. And best of all, Dave Franzese is Bordak the Game Wizard. Check out more here.
