NEW WORK: #3808 JOSH MCKENNA

NEW WORK: #3808 JOSH MCKENNA

WNW Member #3808 Josh McKenna has some vibrant new work in his portfolio. The London-based illustrator describes his illustrations as "tropical," adding that his work is "minimal in design often using asymmetric layouts, seductive curves, squiggles and vibrant tropical inspired colours taken from post modern influences." Further, he admits that he "regularly features sassy robust ladies sunning themselves by the pool or up to no good." Josh's side project titled "Bums" perfectly encapsulates this playful style.

WORK: SAMSUNG'S
HOLIDAY DREAMS

WNW Members #3388 Tristan Kincaid, #2942 RG Lacandola, and R/GA helped Samsung put all of its devices to the test. Using 74 synchronized Samsung gadgets, from a two-inch watch to a 65-inch curved television, this new holiday ad (above) celebrates Samsung through the use of Samsung. The story follows a girl who drifts through her dream chasing a stocking, from one device to the next. The ad required perfect timing of the animation with the movement of the camera to successfully capture this fragmented & dreamlike atmosphere. Watch the behind-the-scenes video below to see how they pulled it off.

NOT WORKING: LIVE FAST, DRAW YUNG

NOT WORKING:
LIVE FAST, DRAW YUNG

WNW Member #3500 Stacey Lee is close to finishing her documentary about our favorite 7-year-old hip hop portraitist, Yung Lenox, and has turned to Kickstarter for help getting it done. Check out the trailer above and head over to the Kickstarter page for "Live Fast, Draw Yung" to show them some love. A little more about the project from Stacey and her co-director Anthony Mathile below:

Described by the LA Weekly as the “foremost doodler of rap”, Yung Lenox is a hip hop portraitist specializing in marker drawings of iconic rap albums, from 2 Live Crew's Nasty As They Wanna Be, to ODB's Return to the 36 Chambers. He’s sold hundreds of prints, been commissioned for record sleeves, custom apparel and had his artistic debut at the Frieze Art Fair in New York. Unfortunately, Lenox did not attend that show. It was past his bedtime. He was six.

“Even though I do famous artwork, only the kids in my math group know.” - Lenox

“Live Fast, Draw Yung" is an intimate and entertaining tale about Lenox and his Dad, Skip, a graffiti artist, copywriter and silent collaborator behind the Yung Lenox brand. As we bear witness to their unconventional after-school hobby, we discover an endearing friendship forged through creativity; a Dad teaching his son about coloring, shading, and the heroes of his youth. Through Instagram and press attention, what starts as a hobby turns into a lifestyle and a business. Soon, the two are hanging with Cam’ron backstage with Action Bronson, in the studio with Kool Keith, chilling with "Uncle Raekwon", and on a plane to LA for Lenox’s first solo exhibition.

Through Lenox’s eyes and ears, the film offers an innocent and hilariously honest entry point into the often explicit and idolized culture of hip hop. It reconsiders the age old parental advisory debate and the realities of a kid growing up in an adult world. As Skip is forced to confront his intentions and parenting skills, Lenox remains unfazed. He isn’t listening to any of it. In his world, art is “medium important” as opposed to school, legos and Minecraft. And that’s what makes the kid everyone’s favorite artist.

MEET #5020 DAN MATUTINA

MEET #5020 DAN MATUTINA

Illustrator • Manila, Philippines

WNW Member #5020 Dan Matutina is a designer and illustrator based in the Philippines. Dan is an ADC Young Gun and the co-founder of Plus63 Design Co. He's worked with companies like Nike, Google, Heineken, Coca-Cola, Airbnb, and Samsung. Dan spoke to WNW about catching the sun rise from his studio, and the importance of taking fun projects that don't pay.

Follow Dan on WNW

1. How long have you been freelancing?

I’ve been doing freelance illustration work for about 8 years already. I do design work in my own design studio (Plus63 Design Co) as well.

2. Is there a time or place that you feel most creative/have the best ideas?

I love working in the morning. It’s usually very peaceful and quiet in the studio. I can see the sun rising from the window. It makes for a very conducive work space. A good cup of coffee from a local coffee shop helps.

3. What's your ideal Working:Not Working ratio?

90:10. I love working. Hahaha. So even if I’m not working I’m still thinking about work from time to time.

4. Do your parents understand what you do?

Sort of. Haha. But they had a hard time understanding it before.

5. What scene from a movie makes you laugh just thinking about it?

The “revenge” pepper scene in Dumb & Dumber. Always cracks me up. Haha.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island, with your computer, what 3 websites would you take with you?

Facebook so I can keep in touch with people. Gmail, so I can tell clients that I won’t be able to meet the deadline. Instapaper, so I can read all the nice stuff I’ve bookmarked while waiting for the search & rescue team.

7. What do you do when Not Working?

Not working is usually spent travelling, meeting people, drinking coffee, eating food and watching movies.

8. Do you have a hidden talent?

I’m a decent folk dancer. Haha.

9. Any tips or advice for fellow freelancers?

It helps to leave a slot in your work load for projects that A) pay a lot but have a short timeline & B) are fun projects that don't pay. ;)

10. What's your favorite thing on the internet this week?

This photo set by Benz Thanachart.

MEET #1449 JESSE CHEHAK

MEET #1449 JESSE CHEHAK

Photographer • Tucson, AZ

WNW Member #1449 Jesse Chehak has worked with a list of clients that include The New York Times, Newsweek, GQ, Vanity Fair, Wire, & People. He's also had exhibits in a variety of spaces including Danese (NYC), Durham Art Guild (Durham, NC), Hi-Lite Project Space (LA), and Lennox Contemporary (Toronto.) This past year, Jesse collaborated with fellow photographer & friend Alex Hoerner under the pseudonym "Bruder". Jesse spoke to WNW about the benefits of collaboration: "It is important that creatives thrash and collide time and again to produce radically entropic and disorienting results." Bruder's photography will be exhibited at Gallery 169 in Santa Monica, opening with an artist's reception this Saturday (December 6th) and extending to January 15th, 2015.

Follow Jesse on WNW

1. How long have you been shooting?

Just about 14 years now professionally but been immersed in camera vision most my life. I'm 35.

2. Is there a time or place that you feel most creative/have the best ideas?

I am most productive in the early morning, highly creative off the grid, and develop my best ideas when traveling at high speeds.

3. What's your ideal Working:Not Working ratio?

1:1 but I'm not totally sure what this means. When I'm not hired, I get back to work on whatever I've left simmering.

4. Do your parents understand what you do?

Without those cuckoo birds I'd be someone else. Both my parents are working artists- fiction writers.

5. What do you do when Not Working?

I party with my two young boys and wife. We know how to do it.

6. Do you have a hidden talent?

Besides freestyle blading? I'm a piano man and a generator of noise. I also have a thing for knots and cairns.

7. Any tips or advice for fellow Photographers coming up?

Hit the road and make friends with strangers.  And say yes a lot.

8. Your photography seems to focus on landscapes & the natural world. What prompted you to break away from this with your collaboration with Alex Hoerner, aka “Bruder”?

Alex and I have been friends for over a decade. We're always bouncing ideas off one another and have maintained a healthy, brotherly sense of adventure and positivity. There are many sides of my personality and interests that wandering down a path of mayhem and cosmic disorientation with him just happened organically and with pleasure. Bruder is not so much a breaking away... it's simply adding to the rich stew that makes up my diverse and ever curious approach to pushing up against the edges of my own photographic vision. It almost feels like we're in a band- but instead of going solo after years of bickering, we've reversed that model. The portfolio of pictures we've produced over the last year is the result of straightforward excitement toward asking ourselves, "How far can we push each other when there are no rules or regulations." It's been all about making connections between seemingly disparate yet familiar forms.

Bruder

9. Was it a conscious decision to distinguish this collaboration from the kind of photography you’re known for?

We decided to work under the radar and with a pseudonym so that we did not have to answer to anyone, ourselves included. It quickly became a deep dark secret. We both felt this primal urge to just follow our hidden, often demonic, interests with purity and unbridled enthusiasm. In the end it's been about having a great time together, combining our technical skills and mutual respect to create widely unimaginable yet carefully crafted pictures. It all happened with very little pre-frontal cortex involved.  You know, it's not often that creatives are able to ditch their egos and just let things roll in the way Alex and I have played out this incredibly therapeutic collaboration. Enough with authorship... it is important that creatives thrash and collide time and again to produce radically entropic and disorienting results.

10. How would you describe the art that Bruder is creating?

Our work pivots on the galactic reality of violent dischord amongst interplanetary harmony of form and spirit.

WORK: INSIDE & OUT NY

WNW Member #2570 Josh Cochran has worked with a range of clients that includes Beck, US Open, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Now you can see New York literally unfold with Josh's first children's book titled Inside & Out: New York. Josh shared some of the background of the book with WNW.

"This book takes place over one day in New York City. It's a large accordion fold book which shows exteriors of a lot of major landmarks, little bodegas and ice cream parlors on one side. On the other side, I drew reveals of the interiors of these places. There is also a page of objects that people can try to find scattered throughout the book. It's for kids but also adults! Published by Templar/Big Picture Press in London and Candlewick here in the States.

I tried to walk around the neighborhoods to get the overall mood down. There is a lot of details that I wanted to put in, like little bits of trash everywhere, rooftop gardens, the textures of the brick buildings, and AC units in the windows.

I've always grown up in some sort of large city my whole life. Even though the cities in Taiwan are way different than the US cities of Los Angeles or Brooklyn, there are a lot of similarities. I just love how everything is so crammed together. I especially like to see how inventive people are with their tiny spaces. There is something really great about all these different individuals stuck together and figuring out how to live and adapt to their surroundings. A lot of times when I'm walking around the city, I imagine different storylines for people I see on the street. One thing I did with the book is have some consistent characters that you could follow through the pages and try to find where they end up."

NOT WORKING: TILDA

WNW Member #34 Jessica Hische just released what is an unsurprisingly lovely new typeface called Tilda. From the Tilda microsite: "Jessica Hische’s typeface for Moonrise Kingdom set the tone for a sweet movie about youthful innocence. Inspired by director Wes Anderson’s quaint aesthetic and the titles from La Femme Infidéle (1969), Tilda is formally dressed, without hiding its raw, intentional naïveté. Unusual for a script typeface, it comes in two size-specific styles to preserve its delicate qualities for uses big and small, on page or screen." WNW Member #825 Rich Tu is an ADC Young Gun and has exhibited at galleries and festivals in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, as well as the SCOPE Miami festival during Art Basel. Commercially, some of his clients include The New York Times, The New Yorker, Business Week, Alfa Romeo, Bombay Sapphire, G-Shock, NPR, and Skype. Rich spoke to WNW about how freelancers should approach their game like athletes.

Follow Rich on WNW

1. How long have you been freelancing?

On and off since 2009. Add two more years if you count during graduate school.

2. Is there a time or place that you feel most creative/have the best ideas?

I’m off to the races after I’ve had a cup of black coffee. My best ideas happen when I’m away from the desk and take a walk or work out.

3. What's your ideal Working:Not Working ratio?

90% Working, 10% Not Working. But I’m usually thinking about work constantly, so I’m never really “Not Working”.

4. Do your parents understand what you do?

Yes, kind of. They are still very concerned for my future and call me regularly to make sure I have eaten today.

5. What scene from a movie makes you laugh just thinking about it?

Pretty much all of the movie Clue. It’s pure gold.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island, with your computer, what 3 websites would you take with you?

Wikipedia, Comic Book Resources, and Netflix (so I can watch Survivorman and learn how to build a raft to get off the damn island).

7. What do you do when Not Working?

A couple of years ago I rediscovered the joy of reading comics after a long time not. So I’ll do that, or make a serious effort to disappear at the movies.

8. Do you have a hidden talent?

I bboy (breakdance) with decent proficiency. I was really serious about it years ago. I spent many nights in dimly lit hip hop and jungle clubs in NYC with a backpack full of dry-fit shirts and elbow pads.

9. Any tips or advice for fellow freelancers?

You’re an athlete. Everything you do is an opportunity to be at your best, and a loss isn’t an indictment of your abilities.

10. What's your favorite thing on the internet this week?

Ahmed Klink’s (WNW Member #1138) engagement. Can you say BEST MAN? Also, THIS is pretty great.

WNW Member #2322 Tom Clohosy Cole is the author-illustrator of a brand new book titled Wall, published by Templar Publishing last month. The London-based illustrator's striking work celebrates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Wall tells the dramatic story of a family torn apart and reunited, and Tom's vibrant nighttime illustrations and sparse text perfectly build the tension that such a subject necessitates. Experienced from the perspective of a young boy, the dramatic story & wonderfully rendered illustrations offer young readers a glimpse into the history behind the Iron Curtain. You can purchase a hardcover copy here.

1. How long have you been freelancing?

Literally, all of my career. So, eight and a half years.

2. Is there a time or place that you feel most creative/have the best ideas?

It seems that the later in the night my mind gets clearer for some strange reason, which leads to great ideas and sleepless nights.

3. What's your ideal Working:Not Working ratio?

Paid-working 50%, un-paid-working 25% and not-working 25%, but seriously when does it ever work out that way—I just work all the time.

4. Do your parents understand what you do?

Ha! I think my parents have a basic understanding of what I do. However, I think they're more surprised how I can get away with the typographic craziness I get paid to make.

5. What scene from a movie makes you laugh just thinking about it?

Tommy Boy—when the deer destroys the car and Chris Farley bluntly says, "I swear I've seen a lot of stuff in my life, but that was awesome!!! But sorry about your car man." (It's also a great life lesson, never give a deer a ride.)

6. If you were stranded on a desert island, with your computer, what 3 websites would you take with you?

What kind of sick game are you trying to play here!?! Obviously Google Maps & Skype so I could get the hell back to civilization and then Facebook for the waiting period until the rescue crew arrives.

7. What do you do when Not Working?

I teach Sophomore Type 1&2 at SVA (the School of Visual Arts) in New York. So that takes up a LOT of my "free time." Listen kids, kerning is an art mastered by repetition—don't talk back!

8. Do you have a hidden talent?

I'm a sick dancer. More than once I've been told that I dance like a stripper. (Please don't visualize me naked.)

9. Any tips or advice for fellow freelancers?

Be nice & play nice.

10. What's your favorite thing on the internet this week?

WNW'S FIRST HIRE!

Working Not Working November 7, 2014

WNW'S FIRST HIRE!

This week Working Not Working welcomed our new Director of Talent, Ashley Nowicki. Among other startup hats, Ashley’s prime directive will be heading up talent for the community. This includes the discovery and on-boarding of new members, as well as identifying and addressing the creative needs of the companies in the network. In the year to come, we'll be expanding our reach to more locations, roles and industries as we continue to spread the good word to the rest of the creative world. We’re excited to have her and she brings a wealth of experience to the game.

Ashley has been on the manager side of WNW for the past 18 months as the Recruiting Manager at B-Reel. She knows our community, its strengths and its weaknesses and is uniquely equipped to help bring us to the next level. Previous to that, she was the Talent Coordinator at Media Arts Lab pulling together creatives for all things Apple. Ashley began her career at CP+B in Boulder, a short drive from her hometown – and not a bad place to start.

It’s important to mention that Ashley is Working Not Working’s first ever full-time employee. It’s a very big deal. Up until this past Monday we’ve been grinding it out as a company of two. Her expertise, personality and contagious energy are already making their mark.

Join us in welcoming her at @awickiiwickii.
